preferences-desktop-wallpaper preferences-desktop-display and system-lock-screen are all used for System Settings panels, and they all use the same monitor image. This makes them hard to differentiate.

Also, many devices don't have a standalone monitor.

It would be good to think of other metaphors for these icons. See bug 641936 for one such idea.

@Allan, as you suggested, also renaming "Displays" to "External Displays" might help.
