Description SuperEngineer 2012-04-04 21:50:01 UTC
Ubuntu bug in Lauchpad = Bug #972718
Bug 972718 <972718@bugs.launchpad.net>

Bug description:
There is absolutely No way in Rhythmbox 2.96 to see the *full* list of
podcasts added (very important when upgrading from one [Ubuntu]
version to another & ofas a "reminder" at other times). The only way
to find out if a podcast is succesfully subscribed [or forgotten to be
added in the first place] is to wait for a new episode... or *fail* to
download the episode because one has "No way in Rhythmbox 2.96 to see
  *full* list of podcast subscriptions".
Comment 1 Jonathan Matthew 2012-04-04 21:55:36 UTC
What podcast subscriptions are you not seeing in the main podcast source? Why do you think this has anything to do with waiting for new episodes or failing to download episodes?

This can be reproduced by adding a podcast feed and deleting
all the available episodes. The entry will disappear from the feed list
and there is no obvious way to restore it.

A better solution would be to have all feeds appear in the feed list and
create a filter that can be used to omit those with no new episodes.

Then don't do that?
Comment 4 Jonathan Matthew 2012-04-04 22:15:03 UTC
I'm not interested in how to reproduce it, I want to know why you're encountering this problem in the first place.
Comment 5 SuperEngineer 2012-04-04 22:37:46 UTC
I [& other users] encounter this problem because this is normal practice, as was the case in previous versions where cleaning the feed list did not result in the subscription disappearing from the subscriptions list. If the intent is to provide a list of feeds with current downloads only then perhaps it should be appropriately renamed rather that it being called All "n" Feeds. "All" implies all, not 2only those we have currently let you see". I think the main problem is coming from "learned behavior of users - learnt by being loyal to Rhythmbox through previous versions.
Comment 6 SuperEngineer 2012-04-04 22:41:00 UTC
If this "new" method if only showing feeds with current downloads how, may I ask, is a user to know if a feed wanted has been succesfully added except by waiting for the next podcast which may or may not appear?
Comment 7 Jonathan Matthew 2012-04-04 22:50:17 UTC
If the feed doesn't have any episodes in it, there's no point subscribing to it, so I don't see any reason to cater for that situation.

That is not the case in hand - if a podcast feed exists & doesn't have any *current episodes* then it does not ilegitimise the feed. There are several popular feeds where the *next* episode isn't released till the following month. If the feed is added, the list of "All feeds" *should* list it [but doesn't show it until there is an episode].
For an example of this please compare this version of rhythmbox against earlier versions - which did list feeds appropriately & correctly. {i am currently looking at Rhythmbox 0.12.8 in Ubuntu 10.04 and can see a full list of feeds - including both those with & without current episodes.

You still "NEEDINFO" [current status of this bug]

Looking through the buglist I find more and more examples of this same bug worded in different ways - how many examples would you like - here are just three random one's for your convenience...

Bug 537480 - adding podcasts gives no immediat feedback on screen
Bug 447384 - No obvious podcast manager
Bug 331699 - New podcast feed should be selected in browser when added

After many years of using Rhythmbox I recently updated as part of updating Ubuntu. In the past all podcasts that I had subscribed to were shown.

The fact that only feeds where an episode has been downloaded are now shown is a real issue. I subscribe to a fairly large number of podcasts many from "national" public broadcasters that take a break for a month or two in the "summer." When they come back it is not infrequent that the feed has been changed. If I do not see the subscribed podcasts and I do not see the new episodes start up again I will not know to go looking for what is wrong or a changed feed etc.

Is there a way, short of going back to the old version to reinstate this functionality?

Thank you

Is this question dead? - in which case I can get on with finding another podcatcher that provides the functionality I need to be useful.

Thank you

This isn't a question, it's a bug report. It might get worked on at some point.
Comment 13 BrianH_1 2012-08-21 03:37:03 UTC
Thank you for your reply. I am not that experienced / proficient with technical aspects of Linux, but if I can assist by providing information etc. to help track down the bug please let me know.

Thank you for your work on this project - much appreciated as a user.

BHH
