Description Felipe 2011-12-12 21:31:17 UTC
I hope this can be accomplished easily. You could have a small toolbar on top (next to search, the currently playing song, seek bar, etc) This toolbar can have 5 stars that can be selected in the same way as in the library.
This way it makes it easier to rate the currently playing song without having to look for the currently playing song in the library to be able to rate it.
This tool bar should be able to be turned on/off under the "View" menu.
This doesn't have to be available in mini mode, but it'll be great to have it there too.

I'll try to make a mock-up of this feature to show better what I have in mind.

Thank you for your suggestion.

For your information, you can already rate the current track through the Edit menu, and maybe through the status icon (in the tray), depending on your system.

And you can also jump to the currently playing track with the CTRL + J keyboard shortcut.

I did notice that there is an option to rate through the Edit menu, but it doesn't work at all. The menu it's show blank and when I click it, it doesn't do anything. Here's the debug option when I click it:

[29 Debug 13:27:21.020] Starting - Saving Metadata to File
[1 Info 13:27:21.054] Uncached artwork size 216 requested
[1 Info 13:27:21.059] Uncached artwork size 41 requested
[30 Debug 13:27:22.024] Saving metadata for Bond - Explosive (on Classified) <00:03:12.2650000> [file:///media/Andromeda/Music/Bond/Classified/01%20-%20Explosive.mp3]
[30 Debug 13:27:22.030] Exporting ID3v2 Rating=0(0) to File "/media/Andromeda/Music/Bond/Classified/01 - Explosive.mp3" as Creator "Banshee"
[30 Debug 13:27:22.030] Exporting ID3v2 Playcount=0(0) to File "/media/Andromeda/Music/Bond/Classified/01 - Explosive.mp3" as Creator "Banshee"
[12 Debug 13:27:22.030] Watcher: sleeping 999ms
[30 Debug 13:27:22.053] Finished - Saving Metadata to File
[1 Debug 13:27:22.061] TrackInfoDisplay RenderAnimation: 31.00 FPS
[1 Debug 13:27:22.088] TrackInfoDisplay RenderAnimation: 31.00 FPS
[12 Debug 13:27:26.189] Starting - Saving Metadata to File
[31 Debug 13:27:26.201] Finished - Saving Metadata to File

As you can see Banshee doesn't let me choose the rating at all (since the rating option in the menu isn't a submenu to choose from)

I also know that I can jump to the currently playing song with CTRL + J, but nonetheless having it right next to the track makes a lot more sense, and it can be a nice gui enhancement (if don't properly of course).

Instead of creating a new "toolbar" maybe we can make it appear when the mouse rolls over the currently playing song info (right next to the seeking bar).
That way you'll have a really nice touch to rate your music.

mouse over

This image shows how would Banshee show the rating when I mouse over the currently playing song. Take a look at the upper part of the image. (I attached the whole Banshee screen just for reference)

By doing this, it can also be done in the mini mode. Even though that wouldn't be a priority

Oh, I think the option doesn't work because of the Ubuntu global menu (the thing that puts the application menu on top of the screen). This is probably because the menu item to allow rating is a custom widget, and not a regular menu item.

Bug 526994 looks like a duplicate of this one. Also, bug 544590 contains a patch that fixes the former one (among other things).
