Description G. Michael Carter 2011-08-28 15:17:44 UTC
Having a separate dialog for transfers in progress is great 90% of the time.

But it can get quickly hidden with multiple windows open (and on more than one occasion I've forgot transfers were happening)

It would be nice if the status area at the bottom had something like transfer in progress then a green transparent bar going across showing the percent finished.

Just so you visually know there's a transfer in progress.

More over, in gnome-shell 3.1.x, the transfer dialog is not visible in the overview, which makes it even easier to lose it and forget about it.

Maybe the best solution is to display the progress dialog in the notification area or in the top bar, next to system icons.

The problem with displaying the progress dialog in Nautilus window is that you can't close the Nautilus window without stopping the transfer. Epiphany has the exact same problem. Maybe a common solution could be found for both Epiphany and Nautilus?

Another problem is that, when you transfer files from one Nautilus window to another, it's difficult to decide which of the two windows should embed the transfer progress...

Personally I'd say if it's an active transfer it should show on all windows. That way your not hunting.

That's a solution but it means that you still ave to leave at least one Nautilus window opened all the time, for no visible reason...

This should work fine in 3.1.91.
In 3.0, due to a gnome-shell bug, the file operations icon disappeared from the message tray when the window was closed and there were no other file operations running. Right now if you close the window, you will get a message tray icon from where you will be able to open the window again (so basically, while file operations are running either the window or a message tray icon will be always present).

I just tested this on Ubuntu Oneiric (which has 3.1.90). But I never get a tray icon with copy transfer... Any idea what could be wrong? Or do this only gets fixed in 3.1.91?

No, this should also work fine with 3.1.90. You're testing this with GNOME 3, right? (and not with Unity)
Comment 8 Julien Olivier 2011-09-13 22:08:24 UTC
I have exactly the same problem as Jean-Louis: with Ubuntu Oneiric I only get the transfer dialog but no icon in the notification area. I have tested in gnome-shell 3.1.90.

After talking with Jean Louis on IRC it turns out that might be an ubuntu specific bug. I can't reproduce the issue here on an updated Fedora 16, which ships a pretty much stock GNOME 3.1.91.

I have submitted an Ubuntu bug report there: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/849733
