GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 655934
Nautilus progress dialog not visible in gnome-shell's overview
Last modified: 2011-09-08 16:38:23 UTC
I'm not sure whether it's a nautilus (3.1.4) bug or a gnome-shell (3.1.3) bug, but when performing file operations, a progress dialog appears. If I switch to the shell's overview (by clicking on "activities"), I can't see any thumbnail of this dialog (I did see it in gnome-shell 3.0.x). The problem is that Nautilus' progress dialog, unlike most other dialogs, is not transient to the nautilus windows, and thus it can be hidden behind another application window or the Nautilus windows themselves. And as it is not visible in the overview, it is easy for users to think that it has disappeared, and to think that the file operations have ended successfully, which, in turn, can lead to more problems... One way to fix it would be to make it a normal window, visible in the overview. Another (better) way would be to show an icon in the top bar (next to the network, bluetooth, accessibility and sound volume icons) on which the users could click to display the progress dialog. The icon would disappear once all the transfers have finished.
An issue related to this is that the progress bar is just not visible anymore after switching to another application. This way you lose the overview over the progress, which is quite annoying sometimes. If it would be visible somewhere in the statusbar or so, it would solve this also.
