Description Raphaël Quinet 2001-11-22 14:19:20 UTC
This has been mentioned several times on the developers' mailing list but
not entered yet in Bugzilla, so I am submitting this enhancement proposal
for the record...

It would be nice to be able to paint with "natural brushes" in the Gimp,
like in Fractal Design Painter (which became MetaCreations, then Corel
Painter, and maybe now ProCreate or something like that). These brushes
take into account the texture of the paper and some properties of the
brush (shape, pressure, tilt, ...). This can also be extended to include
the properties of the ink, such as watercolors.

Raph Levien has written a nice summary of this in 1997:
  http://www.levien.com/gimp/brush-arch.html
Some of these techniques are implemented in his test program "Wet Dream":
  http://www.levien.com/gimp/wetdream.html

Similar concepts relating to the properties of the paper and brush have
been implemented in GIMPressionist, but not for interactive painting.

I don't know why this bug was marked as a duplicate of a bug that was
entered later, but this is probably an error. Re-opening.

Changes at the request of Dave Neary on the developer mailing list.
I am changing many of the bugzilla reports that have not specified a target
milestone to Future milestone. Hope that is acceptable.

Comment 10 Martin Nordholts 2009-07-15 23:16:47 UTC
The consensus has since long been that natural brush simulation is out of the scope of the GIMP product vision. Adding proper natural brush simulation is a huge task. We will leave it up to other apps to do good natural brush simulations. Closing as WONTFIX.
