No drop target on dash launchers

If I dragged a JPEG file and wanted to open it in GIMP (which would be in my favourites), I couldn't because the dash isn't a drop target. Would be nice if it could also highlight the possible drop targets, a-la Unity: http://castrojo.tumblr.com/post/3198857225/random-small-bling

Supporting drops and opening a file using an app in the dash isn't a bad idea and should be do able; in fact I though about adding this at some point when adding the XDND stuff but never actually got to it and I am not sure I will in the next couple of weeks and we are past UI freeze, so sounds like 3.2 material.

(In reply to comment #6) > This is somewhat put in doubt by bug 701387. I didn't mention in the original request that GIMP was running. It was in my favourites. Or I could have been trying to drop it on the icons in the apps overview. The end result is that dnd handling is poor.
Hello I would like to kindly ask the developers to implement the functionality of dropping files/documents to the dock launcher icons and making them open with that. It speeds up the workflow enormously when working with bigger projects containing several versions of documents of different type while thera re more applications installed that can open that document, especially with a graphic tablets like wacom where dragging and dropping is quicker/more intuitive then pressing pen buttons and choosing the right contextual menu item/browsing through a list of associated applications. As a helper, the dock(or gnome launcher) could slide out into view when the user holds or is dragging a file and could highlight associated applications on the dock.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).
