Description Sandy Armstrong 2010-10-15 18:16:40 UTC
(cloned from bug #632000)

GNOME 3 won't really support status icons. It seems that Tomboy currently uses
a status icon by default. I recommend that the status icon mode should be
removed. It should just behave as a single instance app. A "jumplist" like
function may be added to the app icon in the GNOME 3 Overview to provide access
to notes and tasks.

When I launch "Notes" from the GNOME 3 Activities Overview it should just start
an application window. This window would ideally show an overview of notes /
notebooks or something and offer a way to create a new one.

Jon, the application window you refer to would be our Search All Notes window, so that's no problem.

Is there an issue in gnome-shell with the behavior of keeping Tomboy running when no application windows are open?

Also see for some ideas I've had on adding jumplist-like capability to gnome-shell.

bump: Related to GNOME 3, we should bump up a priority if we're actually planning on taking this for 1.6

bump: What happened to the plans of supporting Jumplists (

There are already pretty nice mockups for the search and jumplist support:

The code for the status-icon would have to be moved into an add-on, and a gnome-shell integration add-on is needed.
I think with Gnome 2.3 the implementation of jump-lists is already pretty finished, isn't it? Therefore one probably just has to change the .desktop file?

We need someone to write it.
Although I think Mac support is a higher priority at the moment; at least for me it is.
