On Mac OS X, the option key is ignored by Gedit - this key is a modifier to access symbols such as #, which makes it impossible to use as a code editor until it's resolved I'm afraid.

I notice that the Control key is mapped to command shortcuts as well as the Command key - so maybe they is a more general issue with modifier keys on the Mac OS build.
