Description Vish 2010-07-16 10:16:24 UTC
Bug first reported on lp:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/599728

"Hello,
I was writing a mail through Evolution, I had both the main window and the message’s editing window opened. I tried to retrieve so attachment from the message window and then close only this window, but both opened window closed together. I think Evolution should the composing window opened when one’s close the main’s one. I was glad that when I opened Evolution again I offered me the possibility to restore the previous message I was writing.

I’m using right Lucid."

This is not related to Bug 226432 , which is to ask for confirmation before quit.
This is due to users using Ctrl+W and thinking that it would work the same way as it does on other evolution windows.

We can solve this by either:
 - Removing the "Close Window" option from the File menu of the main window and Preventing Ctrl+W on the main window.

[on Bug 373286, mbarnes mentions he has the crtl+w disabled when only one window is open , so this can probably be done]

or

 - Making sure that "Close Window" menu item or Ctrl+W on the main window only closes the main window while leaving the other windows open.

[not sure if we want evolution running in the background]

Already fixed in 2.30.
Comment 2 shindz 2010-07-16 14:21:51 UTC
I don't know what is wrong with my version, but I'm on Lucid.

I don't have any internet connection now so I can't post here as fast as possible.
I have already seen the different close option on the Menu, but none of those works for me.

shindz , no worries , we shipped Version: 2.28 in Lucid and the problem exists there.

I should have checked with the latest version first , this is now *fixed* in Maverick which has 2.30. [Just checked] Ctrl+W is disabled in the main window for the 2.30 version
We cant update 2.28 to 2.30 in Lucid.
So you just need to wait for next Ubuntu release. :)

@mbarnes: couldnt we just remove the menu item as well?
Right now , It's a constant disabled item and i dont see it being active at any point even when the main window is alone open.
Can we re-open the bug and mark it fixed when the item is removed?

Any reason the item needs to be present in the menu always?

It's enabled when you have more than one main window open.
Comment 5 Matthew Barnes 2010-07-16 15:22:59 UTC
Although, I guess it ought to also be enabled if you have an editing window open.

In 2.30 you can do this without exiting your Evolution session:

   - Launch Evolution from the panel.
   - Start composing a new email message.
   - Close the main window (composer window stays open).
   - Launch Evolution again from the panel (new main window opens).

Hmm , odd. I tested this in Maverick on VM and it seg faults. when i close the main window with a Compose window open. [probably a separate bug :)]
