Description Forest 2010-06-02 03:00:57 UTC
I recently upgraded from evince 2.28 to 2.30 through an Ubuntu upgrade. It used to remember my View settings, but since the upgrade, it insists on opening new documents with "Fit Page Width" and "Continuous" modes enabled. I now have to select "Best Fit" and disable "Continuous" every single time I open a PDF.
Comment 1 Carlos Garcia Campos 2010-06-02 07:36:11 UTC
We think those settings depend on every document, so they are remembered per document. Other users find annoying opening a new document with continuous mode disabled because it was disabled in another document. We have continuous and fit width as default settings because they are the most commonly used settings.
Comment 2 Forest 2010-06-02 07:43:33 UTC
In that case, this would seem to be a good place for a configurable preference. I wouldn't mind the new per-document settings if I could disable them, or else choose the defaults to use for new documents. Or both.
Comment 3 John B Spence 2010-06-21 00:04:21 UTC
I have 2.30.1 and am also unable to find any way to configure my default settings. I should not have to reconfigure for each and every document that I open. I have read this: Bug 316962 - default view should be configurable which seems to indicate that it was fixed in an earlier release but now we are back to the default square box and continuous view enabled. I sometimes download several pdf's and now I have to resize and configure each one separately. I have searched the evince home page, etc and my distro's files and cannot find a way to change any of these.
Comment 4 Manuel Garcia 2010-06-29 22:49:05 UTC
I am also affected by this new "feature".
I seldom open the same PDF twice, so every time I open a document I have to enable my desired settings.
I would highly appreciate if you could add a configuration option for this.
Comment 5 Carlos Garcia Campos 2010-06-30 07:06:43 UTC
Evince doesn't have preferences and we are not planning to add them, but I'm considering adding an option to save current settings as default, I guess that would solve the problem for everybody with minimal impact in the UI.
Comment 6 Mike Mazur 2010-07-02 09:50:35 UTC
How about a simple "save current settings as default" menu option instead of a full-blow preferences system? I like my defaults to be continuous off and best fit, but can see situations where I like other settings for certain documents (which evince should remember).

That would be nice :D
Comment 7 Carlos Garcia Campos 2010-07-02 10:18:35 UTC
Yes, that's exactly what I meant by "adding an option to save current settings as default"
Comment 8 Mike Mazur 2010-07-02 10:22:41 UTC
OK cool. From your previous comment I wasn't sure whether there would be an explicit option in the menu somewhere or an implicit save of the current settings as default when evince exits.
Comment 9 John B Spence 2010-07-02 14:51:00 UTC
Do you mean that will save the preferences for that document only and I will have to set for each new document. I agree that a full blown preference may not be necessary but a simple set of preference or a file that can be used to specify the size and shape of the window and the magnification level of the document would be nice.

I mean, settings will be saved per document as always, but you can set the current settings of the current document as default for new documents.
Comment 11 John B Spence 2010-07-02 17:52:31 UTC
That sounds good to me. Anxiously awaiting that update. Thanks

Fixed in git master now, there's a new option to save current settings as default in the Edit menu.
