Description Raphael Hertzog 2009-10-22 20:17:18 UTC
In Debian unstable with hamster-applet 2.28 I have lost the bars in the numerous charts.

See the Debian bug for other people with the proplem:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=550886

There's a screenshot there if you want to see what it means:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=15;filename=Hamster228.png;att=2;bug=550886

I'm available to run tests if you need more information and I can try patches. It's pretty annoying because you selecting the time span with the bar was really convenient when filling historical information but when you don't see the bars... it's difficult. I did run the applet on the command line and the only significant error message I got from Gtk was this one:

/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.5/hamster/applet.py:132: GtkWarning: Failed to set text from markup due to error parsing markup: Error on line 1 char 48: Element 'span' was closed, but the currently open element is 'markup'
  self.label.set_markup(label)

(hamster-applet:6664): Bonobo-WARNING **: Never got frame, control died - abnormal exit condition

(the second message came way after the bars should have been displayed so it's probably unrelated)

It happens to me too. It starts to happen when I changed the Gnome Theme. I can look for the "evil" theme if it helps.
Comment 2 Toms Bauģis 2009-10-23 10:24:56 UTC
the theme name would help yes. also, any info in colour depth used?
Comment 3 Raphael Hertzog 2009-10-23 11:25:33 UTC
I have the Clearlooks theme (the default one I think, if I changed it it was only temporarily for a try, I don't remember having used another theme).

X uses 24 bit for color depth here.
Comment 4 Dubon 2009-10-23 23:50:08 UTC
The theme I'm using is Darklooks it is in gnome-themes-extra in ubuntu and debian.
Comment 5 Juanma Hernández 2009-10-28 11:39:23 UTC
Bar in charts dissapeared when updating gnome to 2.28. I tried to change theme, but any worked.

I use Arch Linux.
Comment 6 Dubon 2009-10-28 11:49:14 UTC
I am using Gnome 2.28 and Hamster 2.28.1 and it works with Clearlooks
Comment 7 Dubon 2009-10-28 11:51:19 UTC
I am sorry for so much comments.

It works with Darklooks now. I do not know why, maybe an upgrade...
Comment 8 Juanma Hernández 2009-10-28 14:36:56 UTC
It works for me now. The only I did is trying themes, and then restart.

Comment 10 Michael Wayne Goodman 2009-11-03 05:41:00 UTC
I also see this problem. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with the Dust theme. Changing the theme didn't seem to do anything.
Comment 11 Richard Moore 2009-11-09 19:02:06 UTC
I have this problem too - I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 with Gnome 2.28. I've tried lots of themes and it doesn't help.
Comment 12 Toms Bauģis 2009-11-09 19:50:45 UTC
if anybody is up for a debug session, please drop me a mail. i have no idea how long will it take, as i will be improvising on stage :)

first please install hamster from sources though:

Comment 13 Toms Bauģis 2009-11-09 19:51:18 UTC
errm, with anybody i wanted to say anybody who can reproduce the bug, of course
Comment 14 FMaz 2009-11-16 18:37:38 UTC
I'm using ubuntu, and since the last Ubuntu ugrade, the bar in the graphics of Hamster have all disapeared.

Here is the about dialog: "Gestionnaire de temps 2.28.0"

I might be willing for a debug session, if it can be done via MSN or something. I'm not a "pro", so...
Comment 15 Toms Bauģis 2009-11-16 18:41:40 UTC
Thanks FMaz and everybody else - i already have some volunteers now to work with. We are now on the way on resolving the mystery :)
Comment 16 FMaz 2009-11-16 18:44:20 UTC
Excellent :)
I just hope that the solution will be easy to apply (not too much terminal stuff ;))
Comment 17 Marco Villegas 2009-11-16 22:48:23 UTC
seems like part of the problem is solved in HEAD :-)

I'm on gnome 2.28.0 and hamster-applet from git(updated minutes ago) on a Debian Squeeze(testing) and now the bars start appearing again, but not in all cases.

I attach some snapshots hoping they help.

Thanks for the awesome work in this app!

Snapshots in debian squeeze from git HEAD

Sanpshots from Debian Squeeze(gnome 2.28.0) using hamster-applet form git updated today.

Not all graphics working, but some do it now :-)
Comment 19 Toms Bauģis 2009-11-16 23:36:52 UTC
humm, i hoped it will do the trick.
please try again - this time all graphs should appear, as well as past activities in the edit activity dialog and the top ruler in the statistics tab.
Comment 20 FMaz 2009-11-17 00:06:03 UTC
How can we re-install hamster from the GIT HEAD ? (Any tutorial ?)
Comment 21 Marco Villegas 2009-11-17 00:24:24 UTC
wooo!

thanks Toms!

It's working ok now :-)

@FMaz: You want to check http://projecthamster.wordpress.com/building-and-running/
Comment 22 Toms Bauģis 2009-11-17 00:49:36 UTC
All right, thanks for verifying Marco!

I'll keep the bug open until we ship next stable (2.28.2) on Dec 14.
Comment 23 FMaz 2009-11-18 16:14:10 UTC
Thanks Marco !

I just followed the procedure under FROM SOURCE ( http://projecthamster.wordpress.com/building-and-running/ )

After that I removed the applet, and re-added it to my taskbar, I can now see the bar. No data have been lost.

Using Ubuntu Karmic

Comment 25 Raphael Hertzog 2009-11-20 07:14:44 UTC
Toms, there's one more place where the same problem needs to be solved: it's in the screen to enter older entries, the currently selected period does not appear in the horizontal graph representing the time spent.
Comment 26 Toms Bauģis 2009-11-20 12:10:00 UTC
thanks for letting know. Fix pushed to git master and gnome-2-28 branches.
Comment 27 Gustavo Noronha (kov) 2009-12-22 22:11:49 UTC
This sounds like https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25167. It seems to be a bug in X.
Comment 28 Toms Bauģis 2009-12-24 12:19:33 UTC
as fix is in both stable and devel branches, marking this as resolved
Comment 29 Toms Bauģis 2009-12-24 12:20:25 UTC
errm, hamster fix/workaround i mean, of course.
