Description Severo Raz 2009-09-22 01:43:40 UTC
The option of minimizing to tray should be available. I believe I need not to backup my suggestion, but I will--briefly.

Many people just idle on the IRC channels and dislike having the window open at all times.

Almost all the IRC clients have this feature. By not having this simple feature the client is left behind.

The tray is there for a reason. Lets use it.
Comment 1 Severo Raz 2009-09-22 02:53:07 UTC
I found out that there is an option to minimize to tray, yet it is called different. That's fine, but I have to change my suggestion of enhancement then to the following:

The "Always show notification icon" option, when enabled, should convert the hotkey closing signals to minimize signals--or even better, add a setting to decide whether the application should be closed or minimized when the "Always show notification icon" option is enabled and the closing hotkeys are hit.

Please edit the summary to reflect the last comment.
Also note that GNOME does not have a tray, but a notification area.

I am thinking of re-arranging "Notification Preferences" to the below format

Status Icon
  [] always visible
[] minimize on close ( Own the main window )
    [] Start hidden

Notification level:
  () Only on Private messages
  () On each message
  () On each event

any alternate suggestions ?
Comment 5 Severo Raz 2009-10-24 02:28:26 UTC
I have doubts about the "Always visible -> Start hidden", how does that work?

Besides that, I think its fine.

patch

Adds option to "minimize on startup", and in future to minimize on close. Would update the UI to resemble as below.

Can take advantage of bug 642855, which I'm now successfully using to make xchat-gnome minimize to the ubuntu indicator-applet/messaging-menu on close.
Comment 12 Jeremy Nickurak 2011-04-10 15:49:19 UTC
Based on 642855, here's the diff I'm playing with to implement this. No change in GUI right now, and it hides to the tray arbitrarilly, regardless of whether or not the icon set to be always-visible or not.

Ritesh: Can the patch in comment 13 get a review, please?

xchat-gnome is not under active development anymore.
Its codebase has been archived:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/Archive/xchat-gnome/commits/master

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect
reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather reactivate the project
to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is deprecated) if anyone takes the
responsibility for active development again.
You may want to switch to Hexchat (or another IRC client that suits you).
