GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 595671
Evolution junk icons are confusing
Last modified: 2020-11-26 14:41:44 UTC
The bug has been opened on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432458 "Evolution junk icons are very confusing. If you look at these ("mail_junk_icons_current.png"), can you understand what they mean? Furthermore the icon with a red cross stands for "mark as not junk" (you should use it for good e-mails), but the first impression is exactly the opposite... Please replace it with more understandable icons, something like "mail_junk_icons_proposal.png"." P.S. this bug has been reported to Evolution at first: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=595659 , where Matthew Barnes responded: "We don't draw the icons, we just use the standard icon theme names. Talk to the gnome-icon-theme folks if you want the artwork changed, or try a different icon theme -- one that overrides the junk icons." So I hope "gnome-icon-theme" is the right project for this bug report.
While I agree the current metaphors are not good, the proposal looks even less ideal. The toolbar is already full of envelopes and if we dropped that, there is already emote inserting functionality that might cause confusion. Mailbox full of colorful leaflets? Used way to often for receiving mail action. A lottery ticket? Hardly executable at toolbar size. In the end the best solution to me is fix up the crumpled paper in the appropriate Tango style as it's distinct in shape. For making not spam we could 'unfold' the crumpled paper. Would be a regular paper sheet with crumpled texture.
The main point is, there will be better icons. Btw, what about something like the ghostsbusters icon? :) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=com.ubuntu:de:unofficial&hs=GET&ei=OcO3So3GPJfcmgOv27DUDw&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=ghostbuster+image&spell=1e
I don't think crumpled paper is a good idea, because it's like deleting of e-mails. For me the action "Mark/unmark an e-mail as a junk" means more: - "mark an e-mail as bad/good" (e.g. smiles) - or "forbid/allow receiving of such e-mails" (e.g. red/green stoplights or ghostsbusters icon)
Any ideas to fix it?..
I also agree the current aren't very good, but I've haven't seen anything better either...
