Because we like to have just one problem per bug, I've opened this bug to address the above. I just did some quick debugging, by the way. Under these conditions, we do not get any caret-moved events out of Thunderbird. In other words, there's nothing we can do other than file a bug against Mozilla/Thunderbird. I'll do that in a bit after I finish working on the other issue in bug #584263. Assigning to myself so that I don't forget to do so. :-)
I've opened the following bug against Mozilla/Thunderbird: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=503428 Blocking this bug. Setting the target to FUTURE as we have very little control over other people's bugs.
This bug also seems to be present in Instantbird's chat entry. The work around is to Control+Tab out of and back into the current room. (Assuming you have multiple chat rooms open.)
The Mozilla bug has been fixed. We now seem to be getting the events we expect and need.
