This may be a known problem. Which version of Ubuntu are you using? Which version of Orca are you using? Have you selected the "Disable gksu keyboard grab" checkbox in the Orca preferences GUI? Have you tried the steps at http://live.gnome.org/Orca/SysAdmin?
Comment 3 Hari Dhoundiyal 2009-06-16 21:52:58 UTC
Cannot find/determine the version of Orca.

Please include the output from the following commands:

orca --version
gnome-about --version
uname -a

Please also attach your ~/.orca/user-settings.py file.

Thanks!

gnome version: 2.2.6; Could not use any terminal command, each time following error appears (I paraphrase): fail to "interpret" the "dpkg" try "manually"...

The issue here might be with the gksu/gksudo applications. I always get stuck after entering my password, no matter if grabbing gksu keyboard option is set or not. From a terminal killing gksu and gksudo should bring stability back.

Have you selected the "Disable gksu keyboard grab" checkbox in the Orca preferences GUI? I'm curious if this will fix the problem or if other things are now getting in the way.

As a point of reference, on Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04, I selected the "Disable gksu keyboard grab" checkbox in the Orca preferences GUI. I also created the ~root/.orbitrc as instructed at http://live.gnome.org/Orca/SysAdmin. Works for me.

D'Oh. I see you answered the question and I missed it. Sorry about that.

*cannot check/uncheck radio buttons; *cannot run command in terminal mode; *Orca would speak when updating/modifying apps in system menu; Orca has been configure according to recommendation made so fare but to no avail.

Are you saying you cannot check/uncheck buttons in the Orca preferences dialog? The one in particular is the "Disable gksu keyboard grab" checkbox on the first tab of the Orca preferences UI.

> *cannot run command in terminal mode;

Which command are you unable to run? Do you get any error messages?
Comment 13 Hari Dhoundiyal 2009-07-02 13:47:50 UTC
1. I'm referring to checking/unchecking apps in add/remove section; i.e. I was trying to install additional apps using add/remove option--for which I'd to check the desired app but couldn't do so. 2. I cannot run any command string using either alt+F2 or going into application/accessory/terminal. E.g., when trying to install "sudo apt-get install festival festvox-don", it would say: "dpkg was interrupted". In other instance, when trying to run other comands, it would not produce any error message, or any message for that matter.
Comment 14 Mesar Hameed 2009-07-11 11:22:05 UTC
Hi Hari,

The last line of the error message you are getting suggests running
sudo dpkg --configure -a

this will allow dpkg to continue setting up the packages that were interupted.

a quick google for dpkg interupted turned out this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=388348

After doing this, your package management system should be working.
If you still wish to get speech working under administration tools, you should follow Wills suggestion and have a look at:
http://live.gnome.org/Orca/SysAdmin

All the best.

I tested this on Karmic. I didn't get any hangs, but I did notice that the following from http://live.gnome.org/Orca/SysAdmin was true:

"Even after you've disabled the gksu keyboard grab security feature, you may run into problems where Orca speech stops when an application is running. As such, it is advised that you find the command line name for the GUI tool and run the command to bring the GUI up from a gnome-terminal window."

So, you need to run the command from a gnome-terminal window. For example, type "sudo synaptic" from a gnome-terminal window to launch the package manager.

Since there is a workaround for this, I'm taking the "critical" aspect off of the bug.

Reopening as the bug could partially reproduced.

Let's aim for 3.0 at least for triage (since this problem seems only to exist in Ubuntu-based distros, this might be something out of our control which we have to downstream).
Comment 19 Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2013-09-02 23:37:15 UTC
In the past several years a number of things have improved that almost certainly fixed the problem, including:

* AT-SPI2 has a timeout that prevents hangs
* Apps can be accessed via sudo
* Various and sundry bug fixes in Orca to improve its stability

Aside from that, we've come a long way since the old CORBA days (thank goodness). Nothing at all is what it was in 2009/2010.

If the bug is still reproducible in GNOME 3.6 or later, please open a new bug with up-to-date details. Thanks!
