Description Jim Rorie 2009-06-07 14:11:04 UTC
When using imap, the 'On this computer' section is basically useless. It holds drafts and in some weird cases, the trash section is used. But beyond this, it's vestigal. It could however be quite useful. I suggest using the folders as a aggregation point for the imap folders.

Example, if you have 10 imap accounts, you have 10 inboxes you have to check to read your mail. If the vfolder concept was applied, all the inboxes could be combined to form one virtual inbox under 'on this computer' that would show all the new emails in one place. Trash, output, sent, etc could be aggregated in the same way. The existing imap folders should be left for people that prefer it that way, but this would make the default folder more useful.

That is what Virtual folders is for, but definitely not "On this computer". No need to change a User Interface that has worked mostly well for years.

Sure there is. Progress. :)

In many cases, IMAP users select this technology for a reason. They have multiple devices that attach to their email (Iphone, blackberry, etc) Imap provides synchronization between these devices. And these devices typically have more sophisticated imap interfaces than evo. I have 4 IMAP accounts, but my blackberry shows all my email in one inbox. All sync'd. This is a virtual inbox not unlike a vfolder. Anything I do to the messages gets reflected back to their respective accounts without me having to worry about the details. I have the ability to look at an individual account, but I don't have to.

IMHO, it appears silly to have "on this computer" just sitting there like lump when it could be put to use, increasing usability for users. I'm not suggesting a radical UI change. Leave the existing imap account folders as they are. Just provide an aggregation point for users with a lot of accounts to manage. One inbox, one trash folder, one sent folder. "On this computer" seems like the ideal place, if it is technically feasible.

In Evolution 3.4 the "On this Computer" node can be hidden, see bug 667833.
