Some DVD players support DivX and can load SRT files. But some of then can't show more than 37 characters per line. I think Gnome-Subtitles can provide a hint on that lines.

Marco, as you can see on my comment to bug #430961, a feature is planned that allows to check for those kinds of errors in a whole subtitle file.
