Description Wesley 2008-12-12 19:59:45 UTC
When the desktop is focused, the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+N should open a new Nautilus windows. Also, Alt+Home should open a new Nautilus window in the Home directory for the current user when the desktop is focused.

Adds Ctrl + N shortcut on desktop to home folder
Comment 3 Alexander Larsson 2009-10-06 15:18:47 UTC
Hmm, this is sort of problematic in spatial mode. The desktop is a spatial location, and so is any other spatial window. There is no "new window" kind of operation. Therefore, and since there is already a keyboard shortcut (alt-home) i don't think this is a good idea.
Comment 4 Markus Amalthea Magnuson 2009-10-06 17:40:02 UTC
Uhm, I am not sure I am following you Alexander. Every nautilus window has a menu item called "New window" with the shortcut ctrl-n, which opens a new window. The only place this doesn't work is on the desktop, where it should work as well. My previously filed bug 571725 which discusses this was marked as a duplicate of this one. I even consider the current behaviour a bug.
Comment 5 Alexander Larsson 2009-10-07 11:18:51 UTC
I guess you use ubuntu that disables spatial mode by default.

Anyway, even with browser mode I don't think such common key bindings like alt-n should be made more or less global by being bound on the desktop. There are already a global key for this, and there are other standard ways to configure global shortcuts to start apps.

Yes, you are right in that I am using Ubuntu. I know this isn't a support forum, but could you give me some pointer on how to bind this key combo myself? Maybe I should propose it as a default binding in Ubuntu instead.
