GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 562594
Icons overlap in the desktop
Last modified: 2012-09-19 23:54:33 UTC
Please describe the problem: When we rename in the desktop a file with a longer name, it often hides in part the icon file that is below. Steps to reproduce: 1. In the desktop, choose a file that is not the last in its column and rename it by choosing a longer name. Actual results: The icon file that is below is in part hidden. Expected results: The icons should be reorganized and be all visible. Does this happen every time? Yes, when the new name takes more space. Other information: I will attach a screen shot.
Created attachment 123620 [details] An example of file in part hidden In the left, there are 2 files in the desktop. The second file isn't hidden by the name of the first file. In the right, there are the 2 same files in the desktop, but we see that the second is now hidden in part by the name of the first,
Created attachment 124895 [details] Hard disk icon over a folder icon I put another screen shot to illustrate the bug. I've mounted a partition, and the hard disk icon has appeared to the top and the left of the desktop over a folder icon.
I have experienced the hard drive mounting issue as well. I for one argue that there should be no circumstance where an icon appears over another on the desktop, unless the desktop is full.
Dear all, please see Bug 613111

Might be in the system, but I think that because it's affecting all users and 100% of the time users are working on the desktop, this should have a solution by now. It seems to be sweeped under the carpet, maybe it needs some new spirit :) Gnome shell allows the user to mistakenly overlap icons. It should have the very intuitive interaction design as other OS's have, not to allow user to overlap icons.
This looks similar to bug 313563, maybe it's a duplicate.
