Description Nate 2008-11-24 13:12:02 UTC
Please describe the problem:
When I press Get Quotes in the Price Editor, I just get a System Error. Finance Quote can fetch quotes from prices from the command line, but gnucash aborts finance quote when I try add-price-quotes command.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install GnuCash 2.2.4 from Ubuntu 8.04 Repos
2. Install libfinance-quote 1.13/libssleay libraries for Perl from Ubuntu 8.04 repos
3. Run gnc-fq-update and install fq 1.15. Note that the auto-updater could not find my SSL libraries.
4. Run GnuCash, open a standard set of accounts including multiple currencies and stocks. Open the price editor and press Get Quotes.

Actual results:
I get a system error. My security/currency prices are not updated.

Expected results:
the security/currency prices should be updated!

Does this happen every time?
Yes. Every time!

Other information:
I looked for a similar bug on GnuCash but couldn't find one. I tried to run bug trace as recommended, but following the instructions at the link below permanently froze my program when gdb attached to GnuCash so I couldn't complete the trace. That's a bug too! Perhaps I need to reinstall? Bug report for this already filed with Finance Quote, but the developers think it's actually a GnuCash bug since FQ appears to work properly from command line. At the moment, to update quotes I have to run FQ on each security/currrency from the command line and then manually update in GnuCash. Very annoying!

Thanks for the detailed explanation. What do you mean by "system error" exactly? Is there a specific error message, and if yes, what is its exact wording? Or do you mean a crash so that gnucash aborts?

I can only read: "There was a system error while retrieving the price quotes"

While I was looking through Bugzilla before filing the bug, I did see a feature request for more detailed error messages. Since bug trace isn't working with my GnuCash installation, I'm not sure how to get more details. The documents I attached to the bug filed with the Finance Quote developer team show that I receive the error message: "Finance Quote 1.15 aborted" when I attempt to add quotes from the command line, so there's no help there either.

Please let me know if there are any steps I can take to find out the problem more specifically.

Just to clarify: the error message I quoted appears after I press the Get Quotes button in a pop-up window. I can close the pop-up window and GnuCash continues to run as normal, but the quotes are not retrieved.

I am having a similar problem but the error message is different. When I hit the Get Quotes button I get a pop-up telling me that GnuCash failed to get updates for the following securities and then it lists all of the securities that I have set-up in the system. I thought this was a feature to keep people from jumping out of the window because I first saw it on Nov. 20 :-)

I currently have a similar problem, with some differences.
- I have version 2.2.9
-I only have one security: GBP in EUR
-The security which appears when I try to get a quote was a custom one that I created by mistake and deleted.
- When I press the get quotes button once, I get the system error mentioned
- When I press it again, I get the error complaining that it can't retrieve the quotes for a list of items and asks if I want to continue with the process for the correct securities
- If I press yes, an old deleted security appears again, with the value of the security that I wanted to update in the first place.

After continuing my search in the bug database I found this one: 556990 which describes part of my problems as wel

Hi everyone,

I have found that this is a bug with the perl finance library. (lib-perl-finance I think?). I was able to solve this problem by upgrading to the latest lib. I have also heard that it can be solved by downgrading the perl lib as well.
