f-spot should not be able to do this alone, so there is probably a bug in X.org or somewhere else.

We need to know the version of f-spot you are using (including whether it's from your distribution or built yourself). It would also be good to know which distribution you use, and possibly which architecture you are running on (x86, amd64, ppc...). The versions of Mono and X.org might also be needed.

If you run 'f-spot --debug >f-spot-trace 2>&1' from a terminal, do you have anything in the f-spot-trace file when you have rebooted? If so, please paste it here. Is there anything notable in the system logs? What about the X logs?

Can you switch to a console with Ctrl+Alt+F1 ?

> This happens always during first import and frequently thereafter.

At least it's reproducible. :)

Ctrl+Alt+F1 did not work, since keyboard requests were totally blocked during crash.

I am using ubuntu hardy heron x86_64 and the fspot is the default one which came with it.

F-Spot has been stable in this context in the default version shipped with earlier versions of ubuntu, too and all versions of opensuse; these are the distributions in which i have tried f-spot.

Mono details: -

Mono JIT compiler version 1.2.6 (tarball)
Copyright (C) 2002-2007 Novell, Inc and Contributors. www.mono-project.com
	TLS: __thread
GC: Included Boehm (with typed GC)
	SIGSEGV: altstack
	Notifications: epoll
	Architecture: amd64
	Disabled: none

I have checked this problem with some of my irc friends in #ubuntu freenode.net

They suggest that the main problem is that mono is an unstable program and that the programs that they tried out with mono were also buggy.

Please can you tell us what kind of graphics card you are using, and which X driver?

If it is a VIA card, this looks similar to bug #433723 and the corresponding launchpad bug at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/f-spot/+bug/89467
Comment 4 sriramoman 2008-05-03 21:30:26 UTC
Yes, it is a via k8m800 card (quite unsupported?). Thank you for pointing me to the right place.
Comment 5 Tim Retout 2008-05-04 09:44:21 UTC
No problem. VIA are making noises about releasing their specifications, so maybe this will be resolved someday.
