Description Jakub 'Livio' Rusinek 2008-04-21 14:51:05 UTC
currently we can have only one sidebar with one component at once.

it should be possible to have two or more sidebar with more than one component.

for example information and places components in one sidebar are quite good proposal.

http://mail.gnome.org/archives/nautilus-list/2008-June/msg00016.html has a patch for this.

Love it, but it's only second part of this bug. Multiple sidebars left to resolve :> .

BTW, don't you think that GNOME and apps need some lifting or "revolution"? I personally think that left aligned toolbars with few buttons must be aligned to the center - that's OSX-like but still very comfortable.

Attaching the patch here as well, as it's easier to find.

From what I looked at http://www.nextw3.com/programming/Nautilus-SplitSidebar.png I'm not this is visually good, I even thinking this is seriously overcomplicated view.

Comment 8 Christian Neumair 2008-08-05 21:57:02 UTC
Thanks for your efforts. I tend to agree with Baptiste, I think there are to many UI elements, which makes this confusing.

However, I also understand that people want to use the side bar for displaying both the bookmarks and for browsing the folder hierarchy (with the tree pane). I am a bit clueless how this can be made pretty, intuitive and powerful at the same time. CCing usability-maint@gnome.bugs. Maybe you could work out a satisfying solution with our UI experst? :)
Comment 9 Jakub 'Livio' Rusinek 2008-08-05 22:19:01 UTC
you ask "why". look at dolphin from kde4. headers in sidebars are delicate, not so strong like in nautilus.

whole kde4 seems very polished from appereance side.

Comment 11 Allan Day 2010-06-17 08:52:02 UTC
One question: why? Are there any common use cases which require this functionality?

One side pane works just fine. The facility to add additional side panes would clutter the interface, and additional side pane would seriously detract from the content being displayed (ie. files).

We'll be in a total mess if we go down the road of allowing every optional extra that is suggested. I'd recommend closing this as wontfix.

Yeah, I agree with Alan here; nautilus is taking the road of simplifying the UI, and this goes totally in the opposite direction.
