GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 504140
contact list behaves weird on clicking the status icon
Last modified: 2020-11-06 20:06:39 UTC
when the contact list is shown and i click the status icon, it is minimized into the tray as it should. when i click the status icon again, the contact list window is opened, but it is minimized in the panel's task list. this happens everytime except the first time after empathy is started, when it started in the tray. pretty annoying..
i found that downgrading metacity to 2.20.0 solved the problem. however, http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=504139 could not be solved by downgrading metacity :/
I don't see how it could be an empathy bug. As downgrading to 2.20.0 fixes the problem I reassign to metacity. I'm using 2.21.2 and I can't reproduce.
Björn: So you're saying that under metacity 2.21, running empathy, restoring from the tray causes the window to be restored minimised, but under metacity 2.20 it is restored at normal size?

I can't reproduce everytime this bug, however if I get the bug once, it will be 100% reproductible until I restart metacity, and even restarting metacity does not always fix the problem. With kwin it seems to work, but I'm not 100% sure since the bug is not always reproductible. I have the same problem with rhythmbox.
I'm seeing this with empathy 0.21.4, metacity 2.20.1 but not with compiz 0.6.2. Adds some weight to the idea that it's metacity's problem.
<aol>I have probably run into the same problem, "window gets restored minimized when restoring from tray", when using "transmission-gtk" (the bittorrent client)</aol>
In Empathy the bug can be fixed calling gtk_window_deiconify() but gtk_window_present(_with_timestamp)() should do that. So it seems a GTK or metacity bug.
Maybe http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=482354 ? Are you using Ubuntu ? If so, they have included the patch that fixes firefox 3 but changes de-iconification of pidgin/rhythmbox/... by making it flash in the task bar instead of opening on the current desktop
bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old bug reports in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you can still reproduce this issue in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
