GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 464882
Custom welcome script input is char by char and result is lost on new login
Last modified: 2007-09-19 21:23:48 UTC
Please describe the problem: This problem was reported to bugzilla at Mandriva who have said it is an upstream program - resulting in this posting. I am using Mandriva-2.6.17-14, X Window System Version 1.3.0, Protocol Version 11 Rev 0 Rel 1.3 There are actually 2 distinct problems encountered when invoking the login manager. First: when attempting to use a customized welcome, input is not 'seen' as a string of characters, but one character at a time, each single character being followed immdiately by a refresh of the screen, and it is necessary to place the curson and enter the next character. This situation has been around for quite some time. However, once entered, the change was maintained within the system. That is no longer the case. The new 'welcome' appears on the gdm screen initially, but after a logout and login cycle the system reverts to the default. In a similar vein, the system ignores the png files it used to display and defaults all users. This condition exists whether the default option is selected or not. The theme employed is "Happy Gnome with Browser" Steps to reproduce: 1. In gdm setup, select Happy Gnome with browser as the theme. 2. Select the customize option for the 'welcome' and enter anything except "welcome" 3. The customized welcome will appear on the login page. 4. Logout and then in again. The welcome is now back to the default. Actual results: As explained with the steps above. Expected results: The new welcome message would be retained and made available to all local users as has always been the case in the past. The png 'faces' assigned to each user would display, rather than the default, also as has been the case in the past. Does this happen every time? Yes Other information:
Lukasz, could you look at this? If this is part of the "big" gdmsetup patch, maybe this is worth separating out and getting upstream into 2.19?
Yes the "type as fast as u can or else" (related bug #335712) strings have been fixed in the big patch. However im not sure how to separate it from the rest as it require the core components of the big patch, i.e. daemon-slave-greeter message/config handling, new gdmsetup local cache, removal of the timeout functions. George, i cant replicate your problem of disappearing welcome strings, but will try a bit more
Thanks for looking at this for me. Its part of the 'cost' but much more part of the 'joy of cooking' with Linux. The problem of the defaulting welcome script is a recent one but I did not log it as I allow Mandriva's cooker to auto-update all my GNOME binaries. However, this problem was accompanied by the defaulting of the png settings for the users in 'Happy Gnome with Browser'. I thought mentioning both of these might help isolate the problem, but it all appears to be headed to a major upgrade of gdmsetup. It is only me that sees this problem - the internet site is not involved, so there is no panic on my account. If I can help isolate this further, I'll be more than happy to help in any way I can.
This problem was first reported to Mandriva - bug#32412 - who had asked me to report it upstream. At their request, the GNOME bug reported here as been referred back to the original Mandriva report.
