GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 335712
changing Welcome text from gdm requires fast typing
Last modified: 2010-06-04 19:58:25 UTC
In gdm choose Actions -> Configure login manager, and here try to alter the custom welcome message. If you wait approx. half seconds between two keypresses then the current value of the fields gets applied, the configuration utility turns to inactive for about a second, and the input focus is not restored later. Hence this field is only usable for those who can type continuously. For anyone not very familiar with the keyboard this input field is a huge pain to use.
Yes, this is annoying. The Welcome entry fields really should have an "Apply" button so the changes are not applied when you stop typing for a moment. Also, there is a problem with gdmsetup losing focus when a change is applied. This is also annoying and tends to affect entry fields more annoyingly than other settings (where, say, checkboxes are used). It would be best to fix the focus logic so gdmsetup remains in focus after a change is applied. The problem is in the gui/gdmwm.c logic. The problem is in the gdm_wm_save_wm_order and gdm_wm_restore_wm_order functions apparantly not working properly. I would accept a patch to fix these problems.
I've never done any gtk programming yet so I don't think I'd be able to fix it in a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes for the version that you use. By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME. Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer version of GNOME.
