Currently the only way to mark days in GtkCalendar is "bolding" day numbers.

It would be very handy to select day cell background/foreground color (simple ;-) and/or create custom marks by deriving the widget and get day positions (x,y) to draw custom shapes on top of it.

Yeah, I'm wrapping GtkCalendar for wxWidgets, and changing bg/fg colors of each day would be very useful. It's supported on other platforms in wxCalendarCtrl.

Similar request was made here [1]. Custom formatting can be used for various reasons: today, holidays, etc.
