Seeing the new source grouping (http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctau/517877192/), those have a "heavy" feeling and don't look very smooth. In contrast, Gossip and Empathy use another widget for the same thing, which looks better.

This shows the widgets used by Pidgin (same as Rhythmbox) and Gossip/Empathy. The separator line in the Empathy case still separates the groups, but doesn't disrupt the visual flow as much as the big bar in Rhythmbox does.

The expander widget in Empathy inherits from GtkCellRenderer, the bar is just a separator (which is only shown if the expander is uncollapsed)

This would probably be a good thing to have directly in GTK+.
