Could be nice to have some kind of ellipsize on filenames shown near icons, leaving the show of full-length filenames to a tooltip.
Same problem  for the statusbar: if the filename is too long there's no way to see the file-size (or other details) without the file-properties window

Other information:
In bug 422593 I put my ideas on file-details shown by nautilus in the icon-view.
I think this 2 "bugs" could be considered related.

It's not easy to move around a directory populated by files with long filenames.
