I think that file details should be enabled even if the size of the icon is 32x32, that's the most used icon size. As you can see in the attached shots only with an icon size of 128x128 (completely unusable on a 17"/19" display).

as you can see no details are shown when the most used iconsize (32x32) is selected

The text on side mode has been removed. Also, I don't think that displaying details is what to focus the icon view on. It is about finding things by their appearance. If you are interested in the details then the list view is a better choice.
