Description arlo 2001-09-10 00:33:59 UTC
When a user has selected Auto-Arrange for the desktop, we should place
the users home directory at the very top of the list, then mounted volumes
(see bug 41669) then all other files. Trash should always be placed in the
bottom right corner (or bottom left depending on the user's sort-side
preference.)

The bug as reported won't apply until we re-enable the auto-arrange (or manual
arrange) features for the Desktop as Arlo has suggested/requested.

However there is a related issue with the initial placement of these icons.

Also, mounted volumes appear and disappear, so we have to decide what to do
about these in the case of manual layout.

Gene, Let's talk about this today, I can give you my whole brain dump on
this desktop stuff.

I changed the title and meaning of this bug slightly. It now represents the work
to position the special icons in sensible places regardless of whether we have
auto-arrange or not. (Initially they have to go somewhere, and we'd like to put
them in special places.)

If we have auto-arrange on the desktop (bug 41671), then these special places
will have to be respected by the icon-arranging code.

FYI, the Bare bones UI spec for the desktop is at:

OK. This is done. I have one suggestion for Trash however. We should supply
an XML file with Trash in a specified location, rather than special casing it.
There is a way to use the XML file to set the trash in the bottom left or
bottom right by putting it out of bounds. It will then be snapped to the
corner.

Hmm. Maybe something changed since Gene's last comment, because, as
verified in bug 47943, an icon (such as the trash) with off-screen
coordinates will not be snapped back on the grid. Also, I haven't
seen icons appear in the corners by default. Regardless, this now
seems to be covered in bug 45953 (note especially tigert's comment),
so I'll leave this bug closed.
