GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 413172
Rename volumes outside of properties
Last modified: 2018-06-15 18:14:25 UTC
It should be possible to rename the volume icons on the desktop without actually changing the actual volume name. For example, I have my Windows (NTFS) drive named Hard Drive from Windows (because that's the only part of the hd it can access). But it's kind of annoying to have it named Hard Drive on Linux. It should be possible to rename it to Windows or something, while leaving the Windows volume name the same.
this is probably a nautilus feature request and not a gnome-volume-manager one, since g-v-m isn't what displays the volumes on the desktop

I would like confirm this request and expand it to not only the desktop. Renaming should be available from: 1) Right-click > Rename 2) Select, F2 3) Properties Window (accessible from desktop or nautilus pane) Lack of a possibility to change volume labels in nautilus makes for a bad user experience for users coming from another OS. This is basic functionality that users have gotten used to and should be supported in GNOME. Launchpad holds about a dozen bugs marked as duplicates for this particular request. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/41011 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/47363 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/61966 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/68924 [current master working bug] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107306 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133682 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135567 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/207022 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/231265 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/314085 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/388207 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432099
this bug is certainly worth investigation for Nautilus-3.0 IMO
