Description David Gillingham 2007-02-01 16:48:15 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Seems to be a dupe of bug 338783, but that bug has since been closed and this on a much newer release.

Downloaded the gparted livecd to resive the NTFS partitions on my Gateway 400SD4 laptop here at work. After booting from the CD, the boot sequence halts while trying to "detect Adaptec I20 RAID controllers". At this stage, keyboard is completely unresponsive.

The only to unfreeze the system is to wait 30 seconds to a minute for the system to automatically shutdown or to power the system off manually.

I've used earlier version of the gparted CD without problem on this same machine (either the 2.5.x or 0.31 release). This hang has also been reproduced on the newest testing releases available on the forums.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Power on laptop and insert CD.
2. Boot from CD.
3. Press Enter key at gParted boot screen.

Actual results:
Boot sequence hangs while "Detecting I20 RAID Controllers."

Expected results:
Boot to Gnome desktop.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

Well i am about to release the official livecd. It contains new raidtools version. When it is available, give it a try please...
Comment 2 David Gillingham 2007-02-23 21:40:32 UTC
Downloaded latest beta release I found on the forums (gparted-livecd-0.3.3-6-beta-20070222-13h59.iso...I guess I downloaded it before the newest stable release hit) and my machine is still hanging at the same point. I see a "Loading Adaptec I20 RAID: Version 2.4 Build 5go" message and then it freezes "Detecting Adaptec I20 RAID controllers".

Is the stable release any different than the beta ISO I downloaded?
Comment 3 Laurent de Trogoff 2007-02-24 08:21:46 UTC
No the ne release doesnt make any change about RAID drivers (only video drivers).
I think this could come from kernel...
I need to update kernel and maybe set new options i forgot so far.
Comment 4 Laurent de Trogoff 2007-03-01 22:21:07 UTC
Yes, this is fixed in the last release : i set drivers as modules now.
It will be uploaded asap.
Comment 5 David Gillingham 2007-03-19 20:33:54 UTC
This is most definitely not fixed. I just tried using the 0.3.4-3 LiveCD, and it froze with the same error.
Comment 6 Laurent de Trogoff 2007-03-19 20:47:37 UTC
Hm , i wonder if i set it kernel config :-/
It is in 0.3.4-3.
So, how come ?...
Comment 7 Laurent de Trogoff 2007-03-19 20:50:45 UTC
Next release will have some more modules enable around raid : try it when it is out, please. Probably in some days.
thx.

cheetahman,
so I guess your problem would be that you need adaptec ; I mean that it would hang because the module is not enable, right ?
Comment 10 David Gillingham 2007-03-21 20:00:40 UTC
It's a laptop. Laptops generally don't use RAID. Especially not older machines like mine.
Comment 11 Laurent de Trogoff 2007-03-21 21:01:30 UTC
That's the real problem !
I20 seems to be set with "y" not with "m",
So I really don't know how I could fix it. Maybe it is fixed in last release : gonna wait for some feedback.
Comment 12 David Gillingham 2007-03-21 21:16:32 UTC
Nope, freezes for me with 0.3.4-4.
