Description Markus Nagler 2007-01-17 23:34:35 UTC
It seems impossible to get nautilus to display folder/directory sizes in terms of MB. It only shows the number of items contained within that folder.
This is a problem e.g. when putting together a compilation, organizing folders in various ways to get optimal usage out of the 700MB per CD limitation. Same with movements to other disks where disk space is scarce.

Not sure I understand this. Now at least, I have the size in the status bar, in the list and icon views and in the properties dialog. Is this still an issue for you?

The way I understand it, this is about displaying the total size (in bytes) of the content of a folder, instead of the number of items.

Currently, for folders, we see "n items" in the Size column, while for files we see "x kB" (or MB, GB, etc.). The proposal here is for the Size column to show "x kB" for folders too, instead of showing "n items".

In the properties dialog of a folder, we can see both measures: "Contents: nx items, totaling x kB". While this is enough for checking the total kB of the contents of an individual folder, comparing multiple folders would require arranging multiple dialog windows, which is troublesome. And still, sorting folders (together with files) by their size in kB is not possible in nautilus.

This would be a great feature to have in nautilus, but is it even be possible to have this information on the fly? When we open the Properties of a folder, it may take quite some time to get the total size. Even Windows Explorer doesn't show folder size in kB in the "Size" column.

We do have baobab (Disk Usage Analyzer) for this functionality. Is this a WONTFIX?

I just found an older report requesting the same thing.
