Description The Devil 2003-12-27 08:58:18 UTC
Description of Problem:
Arrange by Size doesn't work properly for directories.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Right click in Nautilus, where there are lots
of directories
2. Click "Arrange Items"
3. Click "By Size"

Actual Results:
Directories are arranged (randomly?), but not by
size. Upon checking sizes manually, the second
largest folder is 4th.

Expected Results:
Arranged directories should be arranged with the
largest directory first, then second largest, and
so on.

How often does this happen?
Every time.

Additional Information:
I'm using it to see the size differences in the
gaim log folders, to put in order who I've had the
largest conversations with.
Comment 1 Luis Villa 2003-12-30 15:48:37 UTC
Hrm- maybe this is a lack of clarity? when nautilus says 'size' for
directories, it means 'number of files in the directory', not 'size of
files in the directory.' Maybe that's the confusion? If so, I agreee
that maybe some strings need to be made more clear or something.
Comment 2 Cosimo Cecchi 2008-01-18 19:19:48 UTC
This is reproducible with 2.21.5, modifying fields, but I'm not shure this is a bug. We can't know the size of the files in each directory when opening it, it would be too resource intensive, but maybe some kind of indexer like Beagle or Tracker can.

Changing component as a part of ongoing bug reorganisation work.
Comment 4 William Jon McCann 2012-08-29 19:44:21 UTC
I can't reproduce this with master. The directories are sorted separately now I think. Does this still occur?

*** Bug 397817 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Comment 6 António Fernandes 2013-06-09 14:32:14 UTC
Yes, this is still valid (see https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=397817#c2). Renaming summary for clarity.
Comment 7 André Klapper 2021-06-18 15:17:01 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
