Description kaplan 2001-01-27 18:19:24 UTC
Package: panel
Severity: normal
Version: 1.2.4
Synopsis: tasklist applet -- manual sorting
Class: change-request

Distribution: Red Hat Linux release 7.0 (Guinness)
System: Linux 2.2.16-22 i686 unknown
C library: glibc-2.2-9
C compiler: 2.96
glib: 1.2.8
GTK+: 1.2.8
ORBit: ORBit 0.5.6
gnome-libs: gnome-libs 1.2.8
libxml: 1.8.10
gnome-print: gnome-print-0.25-8_helix_1
gnome-core: gnome-core 1.2.4

Description:
This is a feature which I would really like to see...I would like to be
able to decide where in the tasklist a particular task button resides.
in other words, if I had three applications open corresponding to three
buttons in my tasklist, which may be ordered: button1, button2, button3,
then I would like to be able to rearange these tasks (through some kind
of mouse drag) so that, for example, the tasks appear in the new order:
button3, button1, button2. That would be cool...eh?

moving to gnome-panel

I think I'm mistakenly classifying most enhancements as "Low Priority." Sorry
for this, and sorry for the spam.

Still a relevant bug; I'm updating the keywords. See also bug 128309
for another suggestion/experiment from the usability people for a
possible way to order the apps in the tasklist ("by screen position")
Comment 6 Bill Corr 2004-09-24 14:04:10 UTC
Would it not be sensible to just list the windows in the order they are created?
Thus any regularly used apps stay in the same place towards the start of the
list and any transient ones live towards the end of the list.

My current list is randomly ordered. This is really bad from a user's point of
view as I have to hunt up and down the list each time a new window is created on
the desktop.

Bill: yes, that's possible. See bug 52225.

I believe this request was mostly due to the fact that many have found the
ordering of the tasklist to be unintuitive/unrememberable/"random" (it actually
wasn't random, but many thought it was). However, that should be fixed now with
the patch in bug 52225 that was just applied. I believe that should be better
than doing what is requested here (some may argue that point, but I don't
believe the code complexity for this feature would be worth the benefit). I'm
going to go ahead and mark as WONTFIX. Someone can LART me and reopen if they
think I shouldn't do that...

"I believe this request was mostly due to the fact that many have found the
ordering of the tasklist to be unintuitive/unrememberable/"random"

Well, I just opened a similar bug today (12/11/2006) and it had nothing to do with the ordering of the tasklist. I just consider that functionality would be desirable. Tabs can be reordered, why shouldn't tasks?

"I don't believe the code complexity for this feature would be worth the benefit). I'm going to go ahead and mark as WONTFIX".

I can't discuss it, since I don't know how complex it would be to code the feature. Would it really be that hard?
