don't know if this helps...
i was able to replicate bug nr. 348651 after installing the eog-dbgsym package. but it looks like this did not help in getting the debug symbols.  will read the howto on that in a moment. 
It took me some time to reproduce the bug and maybe it was even based on the photo i was viewing or on switching between both modes very fast.
