GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 358383

Thanks for the bug report. Unfortunately, that stack trace is not very useful in determining the cause of the crash. Can you get us one with debugging symbols? Please see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so. Can you reproduce this crash?

Sorry not to come back with further traces... I have re-installed Ubuntu and got the exact same problem. The 3rd time I have installed by hand (apt-get install ntp) before going into the System + Administration + Time and Date. By doing so the problem is gone. Regards.

When this bug happened on my computer, I was also trying to installing programs with Automatix, and Automatix gave me an error that Synaptic was running and two package managers or whatever couldn't install things at the same time. I didn't have Synaptic running, but I'm assuming the download/installation in the Time Servers thing was what it was talking about, which was stuck. Once that finished crashing, Automatix still couldn't install anything, as if the downloader was still stuck in the background, so I restarted my system. Now that I tried it again, it worked perfectly fine. This obviously has problems starting/using what it needs to, to download NTP.

I'm sorry, but reproducing the backtrace with debuggingsymbols is not possible for me now. Maybe one of the other reporters?
Dear reporters, we are still missing a stack trace that is useful in determining the cause of the crash. Could anybody of the Ubuntu users please try to reproduce this crash with liboobs-1-2-dbg, libgtk2.0-0-dbg and libglib2.0-0-dbg installed? Also see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so. Thanks very much in advance, your help is appreciated! (37 duplicates in the last 30 days, Gnome 2.18.x blocker.)

Using the dbg packages and after I've installed NTP and setting a new server (ntp.ist.utl.pt) from "Time and Date" I got the following bug report: ============================================================================= Distribution: Ubuntu 6.10 (edgy) Gnome Release: 2.16.1 2006-10-02 (Ubuntu) BugBuddy Version: 2.16.0 Memory status: size: 38227968 vsize: 0 resident: 38227968 share: 0 rss: 12275712 rss_rlim: 0 CPU usage: start_time: 1163340976 rtime: 0 utime: 1197 stime: 0 cutime:1159 cstime: 0 timeout: 38 it_real_value: 0 frequency: 1752 Backtrace was generated from '/usr/bin/time-admin' (no debugging symbols found) Using host libthread_db library "/lib/tls/i686/cmov/libthread_db.so.1". Should I also install the dbgsym packages and get more info?
I can't reproduce this bug anymore (unless I remove ntp from the system). After the bug report I re-added the server ntp.ist.utl.pt and the empty server that was in the list had disapeared . Maybe that was the problem (empty server in the list). (at this moment I'm using the dbgsym packages)

The install process was checking for updates in one workspace. I went over to another workspace to enable automatic time updating from a time server. It indicated I needed to install the time server package. I allowed it to proceed and it crashed. It probably should have told me only one package manager/service could be active at a time.

Backtrace in comment #64 is bug #355849. Please, could someone install the debug packages and get a proper backtrace? It shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes, and you'd make my day a bit brighter ;)
I just reinstalled the NTP Server and it works fine ...

Okay, just install the debug packages (liboobs-1-2-dbg libgtk2.0-0-dbg libglib2.0-0-dbg). (In reply to comment #108) > Okay, just install the debug packages (liboobs-1-2-dbg libgtk2.0-0-dbg > libglib2.0-0-dbg). Here's the info gathered: Thank you very much, however, the crash doesn't seem to hit many functions in those libraries, could you please install also gnome-system-tools-dbgsym? that would give a better clue about what's happenning here

I cannot reproduce after installing 'pkg-create-dbgsym' (still on Ubuntu Edgy Eft here) I tried to remove packages, ntp, ntp-server and ntp-minimal since it seems to be affected be the install of said packages.. I weird thing after reinstall was an empty line in the NTP-servers list: http://wasd.dk/files/ntp_list_emptyentry.png And then I reloaded time-admin and decided to add ntp0.nl.net and dicovered that the empty line had gone missing. I guess something fixed that automagically: http://wasd.dk/files/ntp_list_empty_gone.png I save, but decided to inspect ntp.conf nonetheless.. :/etc$ tail -n 5 ntp.conf server 127.127.1.0 server ntp.ubuntu.com server ntp0.nl.net server ntp1.nl.net server ntp2.nl.net Curious that it decided (on it self) to add all three nl.net servers. Porbably intentional, but nothing I asked for :-) Could this bug be related to #351603 ? The problem I had with that does not seem present anymore, but I don't recall any updates related to 'time-admin' being installed, ever.

I was asked to leave additional information. I was doing the same as Comment #6 above; adjusting the time and date. I ticked the box for "Keep time synchronised..." and the dialog went into a freeze. When I tried to close the dialog window I got an error message saying something like "Application is not responding..." then the report a bug dialog. I completed the bug report and then tried again and it worked fine including installing NTP software. There is another problem in that when you try to add additional time servers (ntp.internode.on.net) they are not saved. Hope that helps. PJA

I've just committed a fix on the g-s-t side (svn trunk) to prevent this bug from happening, but you all will have to wait for synaptic to end before being able to close the tool ;)
fix: http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/gnome-system-tools/trunk/src/common/gst-dialog.c?r1=3782&r2=3781 really nice to see this fixed for 2.18.0, this was GNOME's crasher #1.
What a dubious honor :)
