GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 336219
Bad UI design in 'View as' button
Last modified: 2011-06-04 18:51:21 UTC
That bug has been opened on https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/34883 "The big "View as (Icons/List)" button is a good example of a bad case of UI design. Apart from being text-only, the functionality it offers could be easily replaced by one smaller, graphical, switching button that would work for every click. Currently, you have to make two clicks to change the view, and it always shows two options, when you really just can select one of them that will have any effect at all. This shows how much the UI team is tied to old historical UI design ideas. Please forward this upstream for consideration. Tested on Dapper and confirmed. ... > What widget do you suggest using? Having a same button changing label when pressed or not doesn't look a good idea ... I would suggest using an icon to switch between modes. Or maybe even two icons, and the selected one becomes unavaiable. I don't like the idea of label-only widgets."
I agree with this suggestion. I keep changing the VIEW AS of folders, and it always annoys me to go to the View menu. For instance in the MS Explorer they have a View Icon that when clicked shows the several options of View As (Icons, List, Detail List) in a drop-down menu. The main thing is that you do not have to look for this highly used option in the end of a menu. You have enough space in Nautilus toolbar to add it as a separate menu. And with icons for View as icons and View as List before the text, please.
I agree too. A smaller toggle button would work better. I guess people who originally made it like this had in mind that someday another 'view as' may appear (the fact that the keyboard bindings are Ctrl+1 and Ctrl+2 suggest that too). 'View as coverflow' anyone ? ;)
...and having it on the main toolbar would be better, imho.

Changing component as a part of ongoing bug reorganisation work.
Is this still relevant with latest Nautilus. There have been quite a few changes in the toolbar/view UI layout.
I agree this with the UI changes this is no longer relevant
Okay, issue fixed is what I thought as well.
