When popping in a USB stick or similar, if it appears on the desktop and in the panel, it has the correct icon.
However, having opened it, you'll see that the icon in the corner of the window, and in the app switcher is the regular "folder icon".

Also - it'd be a good idea to switch the icons for the folders in the mounted location, like /media, to ensure that this icon becomes system-wide.

Thanks for your bug report! I think the right point to star would be get_special_icon_for_file in nautilus-icon-factory.c, which should query gnome_vfs_get_mounted_volumes and compare its URI to the volume URIs.
