Please describe the problem:
when i open preferences I have to move the window up to see it all.
If i move it by dragging the menu bar...make changes and close the window and
then go back.. the window is back in the original spot.

...so the preferences window should remember the position where you dragged it to the last time it was opened. i *can* reproduce this, but what is your screen resolution? it's the suggested behaviour that this window should show up in the center of the main window.

john, do you think that this is a duplicate of bug 312359, or does this just depend on bug 201362?

The (initial) position of the Preferences dialog is the correct behavior, being centered above the main window.

There is one issue remaining though: A split second after being displayed at the correct position, the Preferences dialog resizes, effectively growing to the right and bottom. See bug 272967. As I understand the original report, this resizing is the cause for the Preferences dialog to grow out of the screen area, and forcing to move it.
