Description Thilo 2005-08-02 13:52:38 UTC
If i open the settings dialog it takes about 1000 pixels in size and I can not
resize it. This is huge - I have to drag the window so that it fits inside the
screen. Sometimes one wants to copy settings from a mail to the settings box -
but I can not have both open if it is so large.

Other information:
I use Fedora Core 4.

Please note, that the size of the Preferences window is effected by the *translation* in this case.

Translated strings, if much longer than the original strings, do have an impact on the size of this window. This basically is an L10N issue, if the dimensions differ significantly from the untranslated ones, and translators need to find shorter translations, if possible.

For the records: The Preferences window is 813x649 pixels large (including window decorations) in Evo 2.4.x, using English locale.

Bug 267787 already covers the "Preferences too large" issue (default strings in that case), and I recall another bug specifically dealing with the Preferences window dimensions issue.

Since this translated window is about 200 pixels (25%) wider, this is an L10N bug IMHO. Moving over, to make the translators aware.

Thilo, it would be useful, if you could have a look at all Preferences and spot the strings, that seem to be the cuplrit and force the window to be that large. Thanks.

The longest translated string I could find at a first glance is "Periodically synchronize contact information and images from my instant messenger". I have to check if shorten its translation helps or if there are more too long strings, though.

sub tab for email settings
Comment 7 Thilo 2006-02-20 17:34:04 UTC
I would think that the problem seems to be the "email settings" ("Email_Einstellungen in englishg) tab if the preferences are changed by the widest sub tab?
I can make another attachment.

Main problem seems to be the number of tabs in "Mail Preferences". I wonder why there's a "Calendar and Tasks" tab in "Mail Preferences", although there is an explicit preferences section with the same name.

Moving this tab would help us much, but it's too late now for GNOME 2.14.
Comment 9 André Klapper 2006-05-22 08:28:54 UTC
the "calendar and tasks" tab under "mail preferences" does not exist anymore.

I can't reproduce this problem. I just tested it and for me the German and the English setup assistant have about the same size.

ACK, seems to be fixed in version 2.22.3.1 on Ubuntu 8.04, finally.
