GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 326899
Use the "self" contact throughout the desktop to improve integration and reduce the amount of typing a new user has to do
Last modified: 2021-05-19 11:03:53 UTC
e-d-s can store a "self" contact, accessible via e_book_get_self gnome-about-me can create/modify this data. It would be nice if more applications used this: e.g. gaim, evolution, gnomemeeting, they could query it to prepopulate fields when you configure accounts, creating it if need be, and uploading any data the user types in one application so it is available in the others. This is a tracker bug; I'll add various bugs as blockers to this one for the individual packages
could this be marked as NEW please ? (yes doesn't change what is being worked on, but at least acknowlegdes the need)
Bumping version to a stable release.
Just one point of interest here. In Moblin we have a patch to EDS that will create a self contact in the system addressbook the first time it is requested (if it's not already present). This contact has it's name taken from the gecos/passwd information. I'd be more than happy to work to get this based off current EDS and applyable if there is some interest.
Yes, definitely interested. One thing we might be able to do with that is auto-fill the name and email address field when you set up your first mail account in Evolution. That combined with the domain-recognition features being added to the account editor means we could potentially even set your first mail account up automatically if you're using a well-known service like GMail.
Good call Rob, I'd been meaning to propose this on the list. Removing my guy-who-wrote-the-patch hat and putting on my eds-maintainer hat, I think we should upstream this.
Committed the patch to master.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution-data-server/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
