Description Alan Horkan 2005-09-07 22:47:18 UTC
Trying to use keyboard navigation a bit more and realised Aislriot doesn't
include any menu item or keyboard shortcut for to Deal another card. (Menu
items are easily discoverable and the keybinding is right there so they
effectively document themselves.)

Blackjack includes a menu item for Deal and it is something most card games will
need.

So this request is for a Gnome Games stock items for Deal which could be used in
both Blackjack and Aisleriot.
Comment 1 Richard Hoelscher 2005-09-08 00:26:43 UTC
Quick comment, I'd disagree about turning it into a stock item....

"Blackjack" calls dealing another card "Hit", and it already has a shortcut
assigned to it, "H"

In solitaire games, "Deal" really tends to apply to two cases... Dealing in a
brand new game, or dealing out a number of cards to the tableau when you get
stuck, as in Spider. Outside of that dealing a single card should really just be
referred to as "Draw".
Comment 2 Callum McKenzie 2005-09-08 00:39:47 UTC
I have to agree with Richard that this is impractical. Even amongst the games in
aisleriot there isn't a common denominator. Having each game implement suitable
bindings for space and enter might be a good idea, but there is nothing
universal we can grab onto for a stock item.

Keyboard support in aisleriot is practically non-existant anyway :(.
Comment 3 Alan Horkan 2005-09-08 11:42:38 UTC
I'd appreciate if you could turn this into something which addresses the
problems rather than closing it WONTFIX :(
or point me to bugs which already address the problems
Comment 4 Richard Hoelscher 2005-09-08 12:18:03 UTC
No problem, that would Bug #126284.
Comment 5 Richard Hoelscher 2005-09-08 13:18:57 UTC
Just to clarify, Bug #126284 addressess general lack of keyboard support in
Aisleriot... when Aisleriot gets assessed, fixed, and removed from that list, it
may or may not gain shortcuts including "Draw", and there's even the chance that
no new shortcuts will get added.

----

To really tackle this bug, first we need to get typical keyboard support...
after that, "someone" would have to either:

1) Luck out by finding a volunteer willing to overlook all 60+ other outstanding
gnome-games bugs and requests.
2) Pay Vincent Povirk for his services to comb through every game
3) Learn Scheme in his free time so that he could contriubte to gnome-games code.

This person would then have to rewrite every game in aisleriot to not only
support Deal, but also shortcuts like jumping to empty foundation slots.

I agree with the WONTFIX resolution in this case.

The stock item has been added in bug 474698 (still need a better icon though), and the keybinding to deal new cards is being implemented in bug 445955.
