GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 314203
vFolders - metadata integration in saved search
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:32:09 UTC
Most people have a growing collection of digital photos. It would be nice to copy evolution's "vFolders" feature in nautilus, using exif information for photos to order them by date taken. Other information:
Setting severity ENHANCEMENT since this is a feature request.
Thanks for your bug report! Unfortunately, this feature is out of scope for Nautilus. What you're looking for is a dedicated photo management application. Let me suggest you to use F-Spot [1]? It simply rocks and is better at this than we ever will be. [1] http://www.gnome.org/projects/f-spot
The initial bug report should have been more clear. The "photo" scenario was only an example, the ability to create virtual folders - like in Evolution - based on metadata would be really useful.
Maybe you could elaborate a bit on how you want this feature to work exactly/by what do you mean by "based on metadata", for instance?
I'd like to create a virtual folder such as "all the documents written by me this year", "all music by XZY".
OK, thanks for your feedback. The "nautilus-search" branch of Nautilus IMHO aims for beagle integration - metadata indexing, that is. I think they don't have any custom tagging support yet, but there might be a way to integrate it with nautilus emblems or something.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
