Description David Zeuthen (not reading bugmail) 2005-07-02 04:04:38 UTC
Hi,

This is a feature request for more icons as gnome-vfs now has the capability to
display drives even when there is no media. See this message

 http://mail.gnome.org/archives/utopia-list/2005-June/msg00003.html

for details. I realize I'm asking for a lot of icons here so I would be happy if
we could just to get a few - the list is prioritised :-). Much thanks in advance.

1. Icons like gnome-dev-removable only with the media shown along with
the drive just like the existing gnome-dev-removable-usb
 http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/*checkout*/gnome-icon-theme/48x48/devices/gnome-dev-removable-usb.png?rev=1.1

only with e.g. the suitable media instead of the USB logo. This is such that the
user can make a distinction of his drives. For example see

 http://freedesktop.org/~david/gnome-vfs-hacking-2.png

where it would be nice to show e.g. a CF emblem (like gnome-dev-media-cf) on top
of the drive icon for "Compact Flash Drive". Here are the icons requested:

 gnome-dev-removable-cdrom
 gnome-dev-removable-cdwriter
 gnome-dev-removable-cf
 gnome-dev-removable-ms
 gnome-dev-removable-sm
 gnome-dev-removable-sdmmc
 gnome-dev-removable-floppy
 gnome-dev-removable-tape
 gnome-dev-removable-camera
 gnome-dev-removable-ipod
 gnome-dev-removable-zip
 gnome-dev-removable-jaz

3. This is another device type for USB pendrives. KDE uses the icon linked
from here (I don't really like this particular icon but I guess it illustrates
what I mean with pen drive)

 http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-artists&m=108076149616075&w=2

Request icons for both the drive and the mounted state

 gnome-dev-removable-pendrive
 gnome-dev-pendrive

3. SCSI is a bus type we're missing (already have USB and Firewire). The SCSI
logo is shown on top of this page http://www.scsifaq.org/. Request icons for
both the drive and the mounted state

 gnome-dev-removable-scsi
 gnome-dev-harddisk-scsi

4. Also, we're missing two disc icons, one for DVD+RW discs and one
for DVD+R Double Layer discs

 gnome-dev-disc-dvdrw-plus
 gnome-dev-disc-dvdr-plus-dl

Much thanks.

If I'm not misunderstanding, a lot of these icons are already in place. Just use
the 16x16 version of gnome-dev-cdrom etc on top of gnome-dev-removable?

I'm not particularly fond of the idea of emblems like that unless the current
system goes away (which should happen, since custom emblems in its current
incarnation fairly pointless).

That would work... it's really something that is up to you as graphics designer
I think..

At the end of the day it's just another icon.. e.g. the "use 16x16 version of
gnome-dev-cdrom on top of gnome-dev-removable" is something the graphics
designer would do when creating the icons gnome-dev-removable-* I think.

I really like to keep the icons separate as it gives more freedom to graphics
designers theming the GNOME desktop.

Or did I misunderstand you?

Cheers,
David

It would still be good with some more icons but at this point please also see the discussion re the icon-naming spec and icons for storage here

 http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xdg/2006-January/007655.html

Maybe someday we'll have these icons and things like this window http://freedesktop.org/~david/icons-unmounted.png will be history and less :-). Thanks.

I guess this one is out of date now, can we close it?
Comment 5 Jakub Steiner 2010-03-31 15:20:37 UTC
Well we now have the gnome-icon-theme-extras module for the specific device icons. While the gnome-dev prefix is outdated, and specific device and mimetype icons don't go into the base theme, it would be nice to have them in gvfs or gnome-icon-theme extras.
Comment 6 Lapo Calamandrei 2012-10-11 14:30:28 UTC
Moving to -extras
Comment 7 André Klapper 2015-02-11 15:44:19 UTC
Resetting assignee to default to avoid cookie-licking (see bug 744024).

Jimmac: If you actively and realistically plan to work on this, please set yourself as assignee again so this ticket will be shown on top of your user page at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/page.cgi?id=describeuser.html

Thanks!
