GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 309141
Gimp unable to open any PSD files created in Adobe Photoshop CS
Last modified: 2008-01-15 12:57:28 UTC
Please describe the problem: I am unable to open any PSD documents created in Photoshop CS. But I am able to open PSD files created in Photoshop Elements 2.0. Steps to reproduce: 1. Open any PSD document created form Adobe Photoshop CS. 2. 3. Actual results: 1. on the right of the "Open Image" window under preview the gimp saids: cannot create preview. 2. if you click to open the image the Gimp give you a message that saids: Gimp message Opening'D:\my documents\My Pictures\Young Eagles\RAW to PSD\aerial photo 4.psd' failed: Plug-In could not open image OK Expected results: beable to see a preview of the image and beable to open it. Does this happen every time? Yes, it happens every time with all PSD created in Photoshop CS. Other information: Adobe photoshop cs is a expensive software as you may already know. It would be nice for The Gimp to beable to at least view PSD created from Photoshop CS. i wonder what is different about the PSDs created by Photoshop CS and the PSDs created by for say Photoshop Elements? :)
"D:\my documents\My Pictures\Young Eagles\RAW to PSD\aerial photo 4.psd" is just the file path for that specific image. The file path differs depending on the image being opened.
Please file a bug report against Adobe Photoshop and ask them to openly document their file format or alternatively provide a GIMP import plug-in for their proprietary file format.
Edward, did you get any response from Adobe yet?
No, Adobe woulden't give me any info about their PSD file format. In order to get them to talk or do anything you will either need to subscribe to their Adobe expert support for 300 dollars (no guarantee they will do anything (make a plugin or create documents)) or join the Adobe Solutions Network (ASN) and register and pay 995 dollars. I can't afford either. Somebody on a forum had a similar issue he wanted adobe to document their PSB file format and Adobe refused to give out any info about anything unless you are one of their developers. So it seems like trying to get any info from Adobe is unlikely. What do you suggest is another solution?
There are some other more specific bug reports open about Adobe Photoshop Documents which might help you figure out if you are having a similar problem. One commonly encountered problem is files which use CMYK colour profiles which the gimp cannot open (this may have changed since I last checked). There is some documentation of version 6 of the Adobe file format and with that and a lot of hard work the developers have been able to get PSD support this far but it may be possible to improve it further. Can you open any PSD files at all? I recall the sample files that shipped with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 were particularly troublesome and would not open. If some files are opening but others are not it might be useful if you could provide a sample file, preferably as small as possible and only including enough information to replicate the problem (e.g. postage stamp sized).

Hi, I'm seeing the same problem with Gimp 2.2.13etchX (ie, under Debian/Etch). I was able to write a PSD file that someone with Photoshop on a Mac could open, but would really welcome the ability to read "real" Photoshop generated files. I'll have to ask whether I can send you the offending file, if that would help you a bit (~30MB).
Erm, and more detailed error messages would be great. Simply saying "could not open" could even be as simple as a permission problem.
It is difficult to know why the plug-in cannot load the images because I do not have access to them. It would be nice if someone who has Photoshop CS (or CS2, CS3) could create one or two test images that cannot be opened with the current GIMP and attach them to this bug report. Please make these test images as small as possible in order to avoid wasting Bugzilla resources. Once we have these test images, it will be easier to check what the psd plug-in is complaining about and to add an appropriate error message (or add support for the missing feature if its format is clearly documented).
Re: comment #7, version 2.2.13 is old. There have been a few changes and bug fixes to the PSD plug-in since then. Before uploading a 30Meg file, try loading the file with a recent release of GIMP (currently 2.2.17) and see if you still can't load it. If it still won't load, having the exact text from the warning/error messages you receive would help. Running GIMP from a command line may also let you see some warnings/errors from the PSD plug-in you might not see when running GIMP from a menu item or icon click. Since a document for the current version of the PSD file format is not publically available, some PSD files won't (and may never) be loadable by GIMP.
I'm not sure if it changes anything, but let's set this a depending on bug 448181.
Closing this report as INCOMPLETE as we never got an example file that allows us to reproduce the problem.
