GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 309081
Pressing delete key on Trash icon should empty trash
Last modified: 2012-08-30 01:06:23 UTC
I've found my self trying to press delete on my keyboard when i want to empty the trash-can. Can this be a good feature or is my brain messed up? ;-)
Usability squad, what do you think? Does this increase usability?
I would say no, delete should mean to get rid of the icon. But i don't think we want to implement that part either.
Bryan: Should we display a dialog explaining how to resurrect the trash (and the home dir link)? Should the associated action label be "Remove from Desktop" or something similar instead of "Move to Trash"?
I like the general idea it fits with the concept of responsiveness, when you hit Delete you obviously expected something to happen. In theory the trashcan should behave a lot like any other directory. I do not like the idea of giving the Delete key a wildly inconsistent behavoiur in this specific context. Would it make any sense to prompt the user [Remove Icon] or [Empty Trash]? (I dont like asking users those kinds of questions, it only makes sense one time getting asked over and over each time you want to empty the Trash could be very annoying). If such a behaviour was implemented for Trash how would we expect other permanent fixtures like "Home" or disks to react to similar behaviour? (Would we promp the user [Remove Icon] or [Format Disk]?) Perhaps something could be done using Delete+SomeModifierKey but that might be too inconvenient and defeat the purpose of this request. Not sure this would really work, still an interesting idea though.

I think Bryan is right.
