Description Martin Ejdestig 2005-05-29 22:51:45 UTC
How about putting Load averages in the Processes tab in the status bar?

This would free up space to view more processes (if the show combo box was moved
to, see bug 305874).
Comment 1 Martin Ejdestig 2005-05-30 01:07:55 UTC
Note that now the Load averages text is so wide that it is very likely that the
default width of the window, 440, is disrespected. With my font settings (Sans,
size 10) it is like the default window width is 609 pixels.

A separate bug should be opened about this if moving it to the status bar
doesn't fix it or if this bug is closed as WONTFIX or something like that. :)
Comment 2 Benoît Dejean 2005-05-30 08:16:02 UTC
i'm following the HIG :
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/controls-status-bars.html

i know the loadavg position is not the best, but i don't think the statusbar is
the right place for it.
Comment 3 Martin Ejdestig 2005-05-30 12:56:18 UTC
I don't understand, where in the link you provided does it say that putting
something like loadavg in the status bar is a bad idea?
Comment 4 Benoît Dejean 2005-05-30 13:06:40 UTC
"display brief information about the status of the application."

Comment 5 Martin Ejdestig 2005-06-01 00:23:57 UTC
Your patch for bug 305874 makes what i write in comment #1 about the default
width beeing disrespected a moot point.

I still think it would be nice to get it out of the way though... but maybe I'm
wrong and this is a WONTFIX?

Hummm... how about putting it in the "More Info" expander?
Comment 6 Benoît Dejean 2005-06-01 08:05:46 UTC
the "More Info" expander displays process info.
Comment 7 Martin Ejdestig 2005-06-01 13:50:00 UTC
I know, but why should it only do that? ;)

What's the primary use case for the process tab? If it is "See what processes
take the most CPU", "Kill processes" or something like that, then load average
is pretty uninteresting in most cases.

And I might as well admit it, not even a geek like myself knows for sure what
load average is. ;) Average number of active processes during 1, 5, and 15
minutes.... ?

In short, I wonder if it's good to put this information at such a prominent
place. Since it is at the top, it will basically be the first thing you read.
Comment 8 Benoît Dejean 2005-06-01 16:48:47 UTC
I think load average is an important feature. I found no other place where to
put it. I think the primary usage of g-s-m is to display processes. At least,
that's what i do. I miss loadaverages. loadaverages is important because it's
the only way to get system load (oh yeah, you can switch to active process and
count them).

We agree, we need to find a better place, or a better layout for the
loadaverages. Let's first deal with http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=305874

Sorry for the spam.

you marked the first one as a dupe so quickly I thought it hadn't registered.
Comment 12 Robert Roth 2011-11-29 06:46:12 UTC
System monitor has a System tab, with a System status section, maybe load averages could appear there, instead of the processes tab? What do you think?
Comment 13 Akhil Laddha 2012-03-06 06:40:28 UTC
Can bug be moved out of needinfo or any further information is required ?
Comment 14 Robert Roth 2012-03-06 07:09:41 UTC
See comment 12 for the last question, which did not get any answer. Anyway, there's a UI redesign planned for System Monitor, so we'll see what will happen with this bug.
