There should be a setting in gtksourceview for set of matched brackets. For    
example, it doesn't make much sense to highlight pair '<>' in C source.     
Also, in some languages it would be good to highlight pairs 'do .. od' or    
'do .. done'.   
These sets of brackets could go nicely into .lang files. There can be default   
set as it is now for normal text, and each GtkSourceLanguage could specify set   
of bracket pairs.

I know this post is old, but i think this would be a nice addition. I don't know any Gedit guts at all yet so it's just a wish :D

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtksourceview/-/issues/
